When Trouble Comes

Hello friends, this is Brother Thomas.

Today I want to talk to all of you who might feel like life is causing you a lot of grief. Maybe you’re worried about some finances, or maybe you’re worried about trouble, or perhaps things just aren’t going your way. Maybe a relationship isn’t working out the way you thought it would.

In times like these, you may be wondering, “What should a spiritual person do when they face trials like mine?” It can be really hard when you’ve tried to be the best person you know how to be; and yet, you still have trouble. It can also be hard when you’ve tried your best to live your life the way your church or spiritual path taught you to do—only to face troubles and hardship. You may be wondering, “What did I do wrong?” You may be tempted to throw faith aside.

Sometimes you are out of ideas and don’t know what to do or where to turn because you’ve already done the best you know how. You’ve prayed, and your prayers don’t seem to be answered—at least not as expected. You’re having a rough go.

But I’m here to tell you that things aren’t always as they seem.

Sometimes amid bad times, it’s important to remind yourself that you are never alone. Your angels, spirits, and guides are always with you.

Brother Thomas

I’ve gone through problems too! I know what I’m talking about. Back when I didn’t know about my angels, spirits, and guides–it was really bleak. What a joy it might have been had I known then what I know now. I want you to know that, even if you can’t see it, we all have spiritual help available to us. Help and wisdom are yours. Knowing this can make things better and relieve your suffering.

Spiritual Tests

Believe it or not, some of those helpers I’m talking about are your ancestors who have gone on before. They watch over you, and they’re hoping that you’ll pass your tests! And what are those tests? Honestly, it really doesn’t matter what the subtext of the test is about. The real test in the dark times is whether or not you will put one foot in front of the other in simple trusting faith that the help you need will surely come–even when you don’t clearly know what to do next.

Right now, I’m asking you to have faith that when trials come, you can know that no matter what happens, you’re going to be okay–and more than okay if you allow the light to work through you. Even in times of trouble, you can be a beacon of light. The tears you shed today will be turned to joy tomorrow as you help others face similar trials.

Allow the Light to Shine Through

It’s a fact that when you are going through a rough time, you don’t feel as though the light is shining through. So, it’s a fair question to ask “How do I know if I’m allowing the light to work through me?” The answer is simple. Are you surrendered to whatever outcome might happen—or are you heroically trying to make things go your way?

How do I know if I’m allowing the light to work through me?” The answer is simple. Are you surrendered to whatever outcome might happen—or are you heroically trying to make things go your way?

Brother Thomas

As we surrender our will to the outcome Spirit has in mind, the light shines brightly. We close off the light when we try to determine the outcomes.

Now you may be thinking, “Hey, somebody has to step in and do something—or bad things will surly happen!” Yes, by all means, do all of the good things you think must be done. Don’t just fold your hands when there is work to be done—or a battle to be fought. Just be mindful that your best efforts may, or may not, carry the day. Determine that no matter what happens, Spirit will see to it that you’ll be okay. So, if you need to make apologies or amends, do so! If you need to fight for your health—go to your doctor, get the surgery, or take the medicines. Do all the things you know to do that are appropriate and right for your situation. You can do all of these things and be surrendered.

You Are Only Being Tested

Here’s something to keep in mind. On the other side, before you incarnated, you decided upon a series of events and crises that you would face. I know that’s hard to imagine and even harder to believe. It’s true. Right now, there’s an energetic block that keeps you from remembering this fact. Even so, you are only facing the difficulties you chose to advance your spiritual growth and development.

Knowing this can help—but it doesn’t remove the crisis you may be facing. So, now the moment is here where you face your test. Whether you know it or not, you are ready to pass the test. You will never be tested over any material you have not already covered!

Now that the test is here, will you walk through the fire and pain with your head held high? Or, will you crash and burn and take everyone down with you? The choice is yours. Sometimes the test isn’t so much about doing the right thing to solve a problem as it is to walk through the fire in the best way that you know how to do—without grumbling, whining, blaming, complaining, or displays of anger.

Whatever the trial, your first line of defense is to look for help and guidance you’re your angels, spirits, and guides. You need to ask for help. Ask for it out loud like you really mean it!

Brother Thomas

The next thing to do, even when you have no idea of what to do next is to do the next right thing—whatever you think that is. Don’t try to see too far down the road; just do whatever seems to be the next right things. Don’t move too fast; let things take their own pace. Just know that when you do what you think is right, it’s always the right thing—even if someone else would handle your situation differently.

Pain and Attachment

There’s an old saying among our Zen friends that attachment to an outcome is the cause of all pain. Well, I think there’s going to be pain in our lives whether we are attached to an outcome or not. Very often, pain is always a part of spiritual growth. It may well be that pain is what causes us to seek spiritual help.

Pain isn’t the problem—it’s how do we respond once the pain arrives? Sure, when things are going well–we respond quite well indeed! We’re happy and we handle our lives well enough. But when trouble comes, the real measure of a soul is whether or not you can you walk through it the best way you know how, doing the next right things, and placing one foot in front of another feeling as though you are blinded and not sure you’re doing the right thing!

Nothing lasts forever! We also want you to hold on to this belief. Your pain will pass! So many people make bad choices because they cannot envision a better future. Pain is like all human experiences, it doesn’t last forever. Change will come.

So, if you are going through trouble right now, give yourself a break! Just tell yourself, “Hey, here’s that trial I signed up for!”

Brother Thomas

There’s another thing I want you to keep in mind.

Ask for Help

Don’t try to go through your trials alone. Ask for help. Not only should you ask your angels, spirits, and guides for help—ask your friends and loved ones too! They don’t always know what to do when others are in trouble—but most people want to help others if they can. So, ask for help.

And while we are talking about asking for help, let’s remember not to tell our guides and heavenly guardians how they should help. They are smarter than us. Let them do their jobs. When you ask for help, never doubt your ability to hear back from them. It is perfectly within your ability to hear from your all guides. Here is an easy way to do so.

Channel the Help and Wisdom You Need

Sit down with a journal, notebook, or paper that you like along with a pencil or pen. Write down your question and then write whatever it is you think you’re being led to write. Ask your question and start writing. Trust that what you write is the guidance you need.

Don’t be surprised if your guidance disagrees with your mom, friends you respect, or your religious teachers. We say, “Trust your guidance more than anything else.” Get to where you consult your guides first and your friends later. Your guide has a lot to offer and is as near as a piece of paper, a pen, and a little spare time.

Remember Your Heart

Finally, if you’re going through a rough patch, it’s always good to remember to focus upon your heart. Yes, take a moment to pause and listen to your heart. What we mean is this. Literally focus upon the beating of your heart and notice your breathing as well. As you inhale, envision a beautiful golden-white light bathing your heart. As you exhale, flush out all the bad vibrations and feelings that lodge within. Repeat six or seven times.

Next, remember something that you’re especially grateful to have in your life. Perhaps it’s your child or grandchild. Maybe it’s a place you visited some time ago. It could be a funny memory that brings joy to your heart. Whatever you choose, take your time to roll this image over in your mind. Savor your memories. Allow yourself to feel the joy and gratitude this memory brings to you. Just doing this will bring you peace and raise your vibration. It will also help you to realize that things are going to get better.
